From Wartsila of Trieste The green solution for container ships – Scienza & Tecnologie

Engines of the present are capable of using the fuel of the future. Wärtsilä has announced the launch, in the first quarter of 2022, of the futuristic two-stroke fuel conversion, a revolutionary technology for converting two-stroke engines, used in the commercial sector and currently powered by diesel, to LPG and – when available in the market – fuel “Green” expected.

This is a significant and tangible step towards real decarbonization of merchant fleets: a “fleet” of at least 27,000 ships, mainly container ships, currently in ports and seas around the world, which is considered to have a high level of environmental impact.

All tests and part of the applied research of the innovative technological solution were carried out in the laboratories of the Trieste plant, in San Dorlego della Valle, financed by most of the investments of €5 million for the development of the project.

“We are so proud to be champions in realizing this technological solution in which we have played a central role – announced Wärtsilä Italia President, Andrea Bucchio.

MSC is also involved in the project, which is one of the major international shipping groups that will share a ‘tech show’ with Wärtsilä: the solution will actually be applied to one of MSC’s container ships.

The first commercial conversion project will be completed by mid-2023.
