(Miami) A fire at a power station on the American island of Puerto Rico plunged into darkness Thursday night, shortly after the power supplier announced it had been the target of a cyber attack, with no connection to it. Bad.
“A transformer caught fire at the Monacilo substation,” Luma Energy, the district supplier of the capital San Juan, was notified. Two hours ago the company explained that the goal was to deny service attack, which made it “difficult” for customers to access their online accounts.
Luma says that CyberDoc refuses a service attack designed to shut down a website with a heavy load of traffic, “up to two million visits per second.”
Both Colonial Pipeline, the operator of a large American pipeline, and the global meat company JBS fell victim to ransomware or “ransomware,” cyber-attacks, whose authors exploit the holes. Security that blocks system systems, then requests a ransom to block them.
The colonial pipeline, the main source of gasoline for much of eastern America, was temporarily closed, causing stockpiles in several major cities.
Luma did not make a connection between Cypriot and the fire Thursday evening, nor did it estimate the number of homes affected by the cuts.
The fire pushed “security systems” to intercept the “current” to avoid further damage, Luma explains on his Facebook account.
“The fire caused major power outages across the island,” the company said, adding that it was working to restore service.
Jennifer Gonzalez, a representative of the US Congress in Puerto Rico, said on Twitter that the power outage had affected more than 500,000 people.
Referring to the “explosion”, the governor of the island, Pedro Pierlucci, said “all necessary measures must be taken to protect essential services such as electricity.”
Authorities are “investigating the explosion,” he said on Twitter, adding that “the people of Puerto Rico must respond.”
Luma Energy, a company created to manage Puerto Rico’s power grid, has been operating since 1stThere is June.
On social media, pictures showed large chimneys above the power plant and impressive flames and sparks.
“The restoration (electricity) will start in two hours and continue overnight,” the provider wrote on Facebook at 7.40pm local (23.40 GMT).
