Patrick Vieira has reportedly expressed interest in filling the vacant role as coach of the United States National Team.
After his departure from Crystal Palace, after 12 matches without a win, Patrick Vieira remained without a contract. According to ESPN, he would like to lead the United States and Vieira has already been approached by the federation for the role. Although talks never got beyond an initial approach, Vieira remains interested in the opportunity: The prospect of coaching the United States is attractive to Vieira, who has studied the team’s recent performance and believes there is great potential at home. . Vieira plans to lead the team on its way to the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States along with Canada and Mexico.
With the United States going through a transitional period following the departure of Greg Berhalter, the search for a new head coach was a priority for the US Soccer Federation. Anthony Hudson took over on a caretaker basis after Berhalter’s departure but resigned at the end of May and BJ Callaghan took over the reins, also on a caretaker basis. Vieira’s long playing career, including World Cup winners with France, plus coaching experience in both MLS and Ligue 1 make him an attractive candidate.
Berhalter faced an investigation into allegations of domestic violence dating back to 1992 involving his current wife, Rosalind. The investigation concluded that the accident occurred and that the Berhalters testified truthfully. The American Federation confirmed that Berhalter is still among the candidates to regain the leadership of the national team and that “nothing has changed.” However, recent reports indicate that clubs such as Club America and Sparta Rotterdam are considering Berhalter as their new coach.
The Soviet Union plans to appoint a head coach by August. In the intervening season, Callaghan will oversee the squad for the upcoming Nations League Finals and Gold Cup.
