The police arrested the kidnapper from Dresden. The kidnapped were released, apparently unharmed. This was stated by a police officer at the scene, according to German media reports.
The 40-year-old – of German nationality – who barricaded himself in a shopping center and kidnapped two people, allegedly killed his 70-year-old mother, whose body was found in a Dresden apartment.
The forty-year-old allegedly entered the Altmarktgalerie shopping center with gunfire, then barricaded himself in a shop.
Shortly after the matriarch, he would attempt to enter the Dresden radio studios, and shoot, but fail. “All the staff managed to get to safety,” said Radio Dresden’s director, Tino Otasi.
The center has been evacuated, and the nearby Striezelmarkt, one of Germany’s most popular Christmas markets, has also been closed. Police are calling on residents to avoid the city center.
