USA: Obama is back to attack social media, and we learn from Europe – North America

(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, April 29 – “We can learn a lot from what Europe is doing to improve social media. Their approach may not be a perfect fit for the United States, but it points to a way forward.” Former US President Barack Obama wrote this on Twitter repeating an op-ed in the New York Times about the new rules the European Union decided a few days ago to make social networks less toxic and fight “fake news.”

Recently, in a speech on misinformation at Stanford University, the former US president attacked major tech companies for not doing enough to control misinformation. The new information ecosystem, fueled by the rise of social media platforms, “fuels some of humanity’s worst impulses,” Obama said, stressing that “not all the problems we see every day are an inevitable consequence of new technologies.” It is also the result of very specific choices made by companies that dominate the internet in general and social media in particular.”
