Ukraine latest news. Bombs on Zaporizhia, China: ‘Really alarming’. Aiea asks for a safe area

Kyiv welcomes the request of the Zaporizhzhya security district

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed the requests of the United Nations nuclear agency to establish a safe zone at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.

After visiting International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors last week, the United Nations concluded that the bombing should end immediately in the area of the reactor, which Russia has occupied since the start of the war and which has been repeatedly attacked since then. Zelensky said he would support the safe zone if it was aimed at demilitarizing the nuclear power plant’s territory.

The bombing of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant could lead to an unlimited release of radioactive material, while the presence of Russian military equipment at the site could undermine their safety, the International Atomic Energy Agency (Aiea) said in a report released yesterday.

Zelensky commented that the report refers to the presence of Russian military equipment on the territory of the factory and talks about pressure on employees.

The bombing near the plant continued even as a team of 14 from the International Atomic Energy Agency visited the site last week and warned its boss, Rafael Grossi, at the time of a very real risk of nuclear disaster. Although most of the team members left the factory two days later, two officials remained.
