Severin Beckwith, who lives in New York State, was awakened by American marshals while sleeping in his hotel room in North Carolina.
The New York newspaper reports that the door was knocked on while he and his girlfriend Anna Friedman were resting at the Fontana Village Resort after dinner.
“I see a group with riot shields written on it: ‘US marshals’ and guns pointed at my face,” the young man told the New Yorker.
Stunned by the situation, he was handcuffed when another policeman dressed him.
The man, who looks like laundry, is believed to have been targeted and reported by an employee he was staying with, near the Appalachian Trail.
He is said to have a distinctive identity similar to that of Petito: one of his ears.
Severin Beckwith and his wife Anna Friedman have been hiking since the end of last September.
Fortunately for the young man, the police allowed him to leave quickly after verifying his identity. He does not have the tattoos of Brian Laundry, except to show law enforcement valid ID cards.
On the advice of the authorities, he shaved his beard to avoid being mistaken for a seriously wanted man.
As compensation, the hotel offered the couple a dinner and a free lunch.
“It’s a buffet. We took as much as we could,” the young man concluded.
