Facebook and Instagram are paid and ad-free in Europe. It’s the hypothesis Meta is considering in response to EU rules and concerns about data and privacy. The free service, the New York Times reported, citing some sources, will still be available on the Old Continent and will complement a possible new subscription version, thus offering customers an alternative.

How much will it cost?

According to rumors, the Mark Zuckerberg giant is studying the idea, but at the moment neither the possible launch times nor the potential cost are known. The move could help Meta confront European authorities and defend against concerns about privacy policies and data use, as well as a game-changer. For nearly 20 years, Meta’s core business has actually been to provide free social networking services and to sell ads to companies that want to reach a specific audience.

How long?

So the potential launch of a paid service on the market – as the New York Times noted – would be one concrete example of how companies adapt their products to privacy regulations and those decided by different governments, especially in Europe. Some sources within Meta believe that giving users the option to opt out of advertising while still accessing Facebook and Instagram by opting in could alleviate some of the European authorities’ concerns. Or at least to facilitate the interests of the giant in the European Union, where it has not yet launched its new Threads app, a competitor to X, the former Twitter, precisely because of concerns in the regulatory field.

New challenges

Focusing on the challenges in Europe, Meta is nonetheless relaunching its activities and on the virtual reality that Zuckerberg believes is the future and which is taking its first steps. Attention is also focused on the new frontiers of AI and its integration with Meta products. AI Zuckerberg and other CEOs of tech giants — from Elon Musk to the CEOs of Microsoft and Google, respectively, Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai — will be in the US Senate on September 13 for a bipartisan meeting behind closed doors of the rules for drafting AI.
