“Europe has no raw materials, no military power, is not led by a strong and coherent leadership and is incapable of making important decisions at the international level.” Under the pressure of Massimo Giannini, director of “La Stampa”, Marco Troncetti Provera, Executive Vice President and CEO of Pirelli & c.Spa, painted a picture of a Europe not so rosy, but he did not spare himself even in hell. Topics of the moment such as the current war in Ukraine, inflation, the threat of China and the economic and political situation of our beautiful country.
On the war front, Tronchetti-Provera maintained that although Putin essentially lost, it would still be a long struggle and there would only be an end when the United States got involved and they would have to do so given that Russia has atomic warheads. Regarding the sanctions, which initially hurt Europe more than Russia – according to Tronchetti Provera – they will now have negative effects on the Russian economy which could lead to serious problems, but Russian society, with the exception of the youth, is still all in favor of the Russian leader. Pandemic and war have disturbed the planet and geopolitical and economic dynamics have changed, effectively dividing the world in two, on the one hand the West with a billion people and on the other the rest of the world with nearly 7 billion with the axis headed by China, India and Russia. Since joining the World Trade Organization, China has been aiming for global domination of supply chains and businesses pursuing shared prosperity and continuing to expand on a military level.
Then Giannini asked for judgment on the Italian politicians and Meloni. Although it’s too early to pass judgment, it was Tronchetti Provera’s idea that Giorgia Meloni doesn’t make mistakes, she works hard, has great leadership skills and can count on some quality ministers. If Draghi made a pretty frame, now Meloni must put the contents in it. On the part of the PNRR Tronchetti said that Italy is still able to do so that this opportunity is not lost. “Italy – commented Tronchetti-Provera – is a country committed to building high creative capacities when there is work to be done, but I must also think of strengthening the south with its potential”. On Giannini’s question about Pirelli, or whether it would be better to invest with Russia or China, Tronchetti asked a back-up question, smiling.
