The companies listed in the IBEX 35 showed mixed economic results during 2023, characterized by notable increases in profits in some key sectors, as well as significant losses in other sectors. Highlighting progress and setbacks, the group of listed companies achieved cumulative profits of more than €46.2 billion, albeit down 10.4% compared to the previous year.
Outstanding progress in key sectors
In the economic scene, the banking sector led, led by Banco Santander, recording profits of approximately 11.1 billion euros, an increase of 15.3%. This bullish momentum has been replicated at other banking giants such as BBVA and CaixaBank. On the other hand, the aviation industry, represented by IAG, witnessed a significant recovery, with an increase in profits reaching 2,655 million euros, despite the attacks it was exposed to in previous years. Likewise, companies such as AENA and Amadeus showed significant growth, with increases of 81% and 68.3% respectively, fueling the recovery of the travel and tourism sector.
Reversals in medium volatility
However, not all companies have enjoyed steady growth. ArcelorMittal, ACS and Endesa faced major setbacks, with losses reaching 90.10% in the case of ArcelorMittal. These numbers reflect the volatility of markets such as construction and energy in an uncertain global context. In addition, Grifols also stood out in terms of bearish results, generating profits of €59 million, 71.50% lower than the previous year, in a scenario marked by controversy with a bearish Gotham company.
Companies in red numbers
2023 was not a good year for some companies in the IBEX 35, as they announced as many as four losses, leaving almost €2.3 billion in the results pool. Colonial topped the list with losses of 1,019 million euros, followed by Telefónica, Cellnex and Merlin Properties, which also recorded red numbers for various reasons, from provisions to impairment of assets.
future prospects
Despite the volatility, companies in the Ibex 35 continue to face market challenges and adapt to ever-changing sector dynamics. The 2023 economic results present a diverse panorama of the ups and downs that characterize today's business world.
