Palermo – On Friday 1 April, from 9:00 to 13:00, a study day will be held in Marsala at the Lilibio Regional Archaeological Museum in Marsala for secondary school students as part of the 8th edition of the national event ‘Art and (‘) Science. Commissioned by researchers from the Department of Biological, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology (STEBICEF) of the University of Palermo and the Institute of Chemical and Physical Processes CNR of Messina, in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Lilibeo-Marsala, directed by Anna Maria Barinello, the initiative is part of the activities aimed at the dissemination and education of cultural heritage. This is an activity in which the Archaeological Park of Lilibio is widely involved through the School Museum project, dedicated this year to the theme “Lilibio and the Sea”. The study day will aim to illustrate the contribution of investigation in scientific research to students in the diagnosis and preservation of archaeological heritage, but also to demonstrate laboratory activities aimed at familiarizing students with the application of non-invasive techniques to archaeological assets created using portable equipment. For this purpose, workstations will be set up in the museum rooms that will host real Raman and XRF spectroscopy and laser-scanner reconstruction laboratories to study some important classes of materials, such as those found in pots painted in Lillibiu’s tomb. “Archaeological parks are not containers of enclosed objects and spaces, but lively and modern spaces in which the study of the past is combined with the most accurate and modern scientific research and study techniques. Days like those promoted by the University and the National Research Council – confirms the Regional Adviser for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, Alberto Samona – It offers young people a window of knowledge about the techniques used to study the ancient and the potential for action offered by a very modern scientific field of study, which in Sicily still has vast areas of exploration.”
