A few days ago we learned that Collapse presenter Ricard Austrell is going to be a father and will stop leading the show as he will be enjoying paternity leave. Before that, he recorded some shows that were already broadcast. The first, last Saturday, in which one of the guests was Catalan chef Maria Nicolau, moved the audience and viewers at home.
Nicolau used to smile because of his sense of humor and because he is a very nice person . However, during the interview he made us cry. She cried, Ricard Austrell cried, the audience on set cried, and the spectators cried. It’s not bad to cry. The cook told a very difficult personal story. “There came a time when I found myself without a home, without a job, with a daughter, with a suitcase, and my life crammed into twenty cardboard boxes in the middle of the street. I got so angry, it wasn’t fair.”
He has a daughter and stresses that he has never lacked anything thanks to his work and perseverance. “Culture of sacrifice? And all I do is eat crap? I was tired, frustrated, angry, everything hurt. What did I do? Say ‘it’s over.’ I went to a bar in town, ‘let go of pride and put it in mind.’ If you’re good, Test what you know and implement it.”
Then he began to see the light. He went to the village pub and asked for a job. The manager asked: Do you trust me? And they trusted him. Hence a great chef of traditional Catalan cuisine was born. The speech was greatly appreciated by the audience, due to its humility and ability to transcend.
There was no shortage of criticism for great chefs with Michelin stars, Repsol soles and other gastronomic distinctions. ” You look at the pictures of the great gastronomic congresses, the elites, the people who have succeeded, and you wonder: “Where are the women”?… Where are they?: going to pick up their children from school, putting on a washing machine. ..!! What frightened me was that she, my daughter, was missing nothing.”
The artistic face of Maria Nicolaou
Maria Nicolaou has an artistic side. On the one hand, she loves being in front of the camera and is commonly seen in different programs on TV3 . We’ve seen him in “Està Passant” with Toni Soler, in Totés Mou, with Helena García Melero, and, most recently, we’ve also seen his alter ego in the comedy and political satire show Bologna.
She is also known for her books that thrive in libraries. “Cremo” was one of Sant Jordi’s bestsellers last time out. As you say, it’s a cookbook but without the pictures. He explains recipes, but also narrates episodes from his personal life.
Maria Nicolau and the Stranger
Few people know that Maria Nicolaou introduced herself on TV3’s El Foraster program , submitted by Kim Masferrer. The actor and comedian was visiting Vilanova de São and found this chef from El Ferrer de Tall restaurant. His words went viral because he criticized the rudeness of some visitors: “It’s good that they are giving us work, but you can be polite.” deyaa.
