A series of “Scientific Dialogues” events at the Civic Museum of Natural History in Trieste

Ecothema Società Cooperativa Sociale, concessionaire of educational services for civic science museums in Trieste as of September 2023, announces the launch of the cycle of publishing activities “Science Dialogues”.

These are five events that will take place at the Civic Museum of Natural History in Trieste, on Route Tomins 4. It starts with the first event on Wednesday 29 November 2023 and continues with the other four until March 2024. The aim is to provide updates and insights on scientific topics of great interest, and to actively engage citizens in Understanding science.

Science Dialogues aims to review and update the public’s knowledge on various scientific topics, paying special attention to the latest discoveries that have significantly changed the perception of many phenomena and processes in the field of science.

The topics were carefully selected on the basis of surveys and direct dialogues with participants in educational and dissemination activities, drawing on Ecothema’s many years of experience in the field of museum education.

Topics covered range from human origins, taking a journey through the latest discoveries in the field of paleoanthropology, with special attention to new theories that have revolutionized our understanding of this subject, to magnificent butterflies, thanks to a dedicated meeting. To raise awareness about the protection of insects, which are often overlooked in environmental discussions, and focus on Lepidoptera and their role in the ecosystem.

We’ll talk about the evolution of species, exploring common ideas and misunderstandings about evolution through natural selection, while considering modern scientific explanations of the concept.

There will be an in-depth study of Neanderthals, and the life of this fascinating human species and its relationship with Homo sapiens will be analysed, contextualized, often misunderstood concepts clarified and the latest fossil and DNA findings discussed.

The series of interviews concludes by drawing attention to the prehistoric crocodile Asinodon, an exceptional fossil from the fishermen’s village that is often overshadowed by the fame of dinosaurs. We will explore their unique characteristics and role in the Cretaceous ecosystem.

Each appointment includes a conference room presentation and a guided tour of the Natural History Museum’s exhibition spaces related to the topic being covered, to make the experience as immersive and educational as possible.

27 March 2024, 5.30pm – 6.30pm: “Strange Prehistoric Crocodile in Fisherman’s Village” – Speaker: Kevin Miloko, Geologist
