The aim of the lessons dedicated to the sciences presented in the new program of the Casale Monferrato Unit is to maintain a love for these subjects, indispensable for understanding the world and the progress of mankind.
He recalls the teachings of the Swiss philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, an educator who began his career with the publication of a Discourse on Science and the Arts, which in 1750 won a competition held by the Académie Dijon.
Indeed, Rousseau argued that it was not important to teach science to be able to impart a taste for these subjects. Thus Professor Paolo Volpi, who has just told the secrets of the solar system and our planet in the first lesson of its path, will continue until May showing, among other things, the characteristics of volcanoes and the drift of continents.
A particularly important meeting will be the one devoted to water, a resource never before seen as so precious to us after the drought that hit Italy and Europe in the months that have just passed. The topic of water will present the final lesson about chlorophyll photosynthesis, a process essential for plants, which are closely related to this element like all living things on the planet.
In his lectures, Professor Volpi deals with complex concepts with great simplicity, from the distances between stars to the chemical formulas that gave rise to life.
No less important are the scheduled meetings with Professor Giovanni Plistre, teacher of physics. On October 20, he started the course with a lecture on “The Law of Universal Gravitation”. Professor Plasteri’s physics lessons remind us that knowledge is always a source of personal enrichment and great pleasure. As he himself wrote in his presentation of the course: “In the mathematical and physical sciences, the instrument which perceives beauty par excellence is that of the complex laws in the perfect equilibrium of the equation.” In fact, his lessons center around some examples of physical laws, whose equations define the basic sections of worldview.
The first relates to the “law of universal gravitation”, while in November and January Professor Blastery will address gravitational waves and Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle. Registrations are still open: all information is on the website www.unitrecasale.it.
