The Hockey World Cup U-18 Championship ended today in Basel / Borntroy in the spirit of the United States. And the North Americans, in a repeat of the 2022 final, defeated Sweden 3-2 after extra time, taking their revenge. At St. Jacob’s Arena, the Americans led the game, but were penalized once per half in the first two segments by Stahlberg at 9’33” and Nordeh at 26’14”. Then the Swedes struggled with American enthusiasm in the final third which led to goals from Nelson and Esserman. In overtime, Leonard settled the dispute. This is the Stars and Stripes National Team’s eleventh victory.
In the afternoon, Canada won the challenge for third and fourth place. The maple leaf team beat Slovakia 4-3 after extra time. The Truett boys were pulled by two players on the nose for the NHL draft: Wood had four points (1 goal and 3 assists) while Ciprini scored (2 goals and 1 assist), scoring the decisive point at 67’51”.
