According to Reconstruction Police Chief Kishant Sewell, the girl was returning from her school in the Bronx, North Manhattan, accompanied by another 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy. At an intersection, they bumped into a man who was quarreling with another on the opposite sidewalk and he pulled out his pistol and began shooting in batches. The girl was hit in the chest and the other two in the leg and buttocks. They were taken to the hospital, but the 16-year-old was unsuccessful.
