Public Health activates the protocol for monitoring cases of dengue, chikungunya, Zika and West Nile fever in Catalonia

Sant Antoni de Vilamajor City Council shared a public health notice issued by the Public Health Agency of Catalonia, which warns of the transmission of cases of dengue, chikungunya, Zika and West Nile fever. From 3 June 2024, the measures set out in the Protocol for the Surveillance and Control of These Mosquito-Borne Diseases will be activated in Catalonia.

Details of the protocol and prevention measures

These diseases, transmitted by mosquito vectors such as the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and the common mosquito (Culex pipiens), are becoming a growing public health problem. The protocol sets out prevention and control measures that include detection and audit of mosquito breeding sites, environmental regulation measures and measures to raise awareness among the population. Larvicidal and, where appropriate, adulticide treatments will also be adopted to control mosquito populations.

Monitoring strategies

During the period of active adult mosquitoes, entomological examination will be performed in areas where cases of the above diseases have been detected. These inspections aim to assess the presence of mosquitoes that transmit the disease, collect samples to analyze the possible presence of viruses and recommend prevention and control measures.

The importance of citizen cooperation

The Catalan Public Health Agency and the City Council of Sant Antoni de Vilamajor are calling for the cooperation of the public to prevent the spread of mosquitoes. On the website of the Public Health Agency of Catalonia you can find preventive materials and detailed recommendations on how to act to avoid the presence of mosquitoes and protect public health.
