Saint Benedict – Massimo Polidoro gifts “Incredible science(Edizione Feltrinelli). The appointment is set for Monday 19 June at 21.30 in the Palazzina Azzurra. Francesco Tranquili presents the evening.
Let’s face it: reality doesn’t care what we believe. However, our beliefs change the way we perceive the world. But where are beliefs born and how do they spread? What leads us to support the most outlandish or utterly absurd ideas, or to mistake simple suggestions, fantasies, or, at most, ideologies and acts of faith as indestructible proofs? Why do we end up contradicting even the evidence of the facts? And are those who cultivate the most extreme convictions simply insane or, rather, victims of social media manipulation?
Indeed, technology amplifies what has always been inherent in humans: the need to understand our surroundings. To understand how our beliefs were formed, it is then necessary to go back to the origins to discover how evolution made the brain such a formidable system for the survival of our species, even by believing things that are decidedly wrong.
By telling some amazing stories, we will explore the biological and psychological roots that fuel the need for belief and, using the latest research, discover the functions belief systems still perform.
