With an annual incidence of 1 case per 100 people, cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in Spain, at 28% of the total, slightly higher than tumors (27%), and are also the first cause of hospitalization.

According to data from the 2022 Cardiovascular Health Strategy document SNS, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Spain affects 9.8% of the population, and is slightly more common in women than in men (52.6% in women and 47.4% in men).

With reference exclusively to stroke, every year in Spain 120,000 people suffer from stroke, of whom about 25,000 die, while about 40,000 live with some type of consequence, which is the main cause of disability in Europe. In the Balearic Islands, 2,100 cases of stroke occur every year, of which about 350 people die.

In addition, these diseases are accompanied by a lot of morbidity and consequences that lead to high rates of chronic disease and disability, which reduces the quality of life of patients and means high cost and increased burden on health care systems. However, these deaths have decreased in recent years as a result of improvement in approaches, especially the momentum for prevention and control of vascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, dyslipidemia, etc.). .).

These risk factors, common in cardiovascular diseases and stroke, are modifiable by adopting healthy lifestyle habits, and therefore, there is an opportunity to reduce vascular risks and avoid the onset of these diseases through prevention and health promotion, which are key points in the treatment of both diseases.
