Conference “Science and Techniques for Mountain Development: 20 years of the Valchiavina Station for the Study of the Alpine Ecology

The Valchiavina Alpine Ecology Station, a branch of the Geosciences Department of the University of Milan in Chiavina, celebrated 20 years since the “Science and Technology of Mountain Development” conference, organized on September 23-24 in Chiavina in collaboration with the mountain community, the municipality of Chiavina and the Valchiavina Museum System. , with the aim of introducing the role and activities of the geologists of the Valchiavina Station in the region in cooperation with the local population.

The President of the Mountain Society David Trosoni and Mayor of Chiavina Luca Della Beta, representatives of regional and local bodies, from the Union of Geologists and Researchers of the Study Station and Academics along with the Director of the Valchiavenna Station Professor Sa Tiziana Apuani intervened. which discussed issues related to geosciences applied to public utility problems, strategies to prevent geological and environmental hazards, and to protect and enhance natural and environmental resources, landscapes and assets and their proper use.

The program includes interventions dedicated to the collaboration between the University of Milan and the mountain community of Valchiavina, to commemorate Professor Giorgio Pascuar and the CARG (Geological Mapping of Italy) project and strategies for the interior region; Round table with ALUMNI “From training to the profession of a geologist: study and work experiences in Valchiavenna” and an in-depth session on the scientific and strategic aspects of the development of the mountain environment, which ended with a guided tour of the hydroelectric plant A2A di Mese, unique in the sector of renewable energy production in mountain environments Alps.

The exhibitions at Valchiavenna Station and at the new AMALPI Center – International Center for Large Alpine Landslides “Alpi in Movimento – Movimento nelle ALPI” in Chiavenna were an opportunity to lead the participants to the Caurga of Parco Paradiso and to the Center of the Exe Convento de Capuchins Library. With the support of the municipal administrations of Chiavina and Piuro and the Italian-Swiss Association of Piuro Excavations, the event was enriched with visits to the historical and cultural beauties offered by Val Bragaglia, the magnificent Palazzo Vertemate – Franchi di Piuro of the 16th century and the Belfort archaeological site.

The interest and participation shown by the participants, about a hundred specialists, administrators, professionals, teachers and lovers of this subject – to which semester V was added from the Instituto Leonardo da Vinci in Chiavina – confirms the effectiveness of the twenty-year cooperation between the University of Milan, the mountain community and local authorities in promoting a culture of respect for the territory, awareness of the risks and dangers but also of the resources they provide, increasing confidence in research and institutions, and stimulating a civic sense.
