BarcelonaA multiple terrorist attack occurred in the Dagestan region of southern Russia, killing at least 19 people, the Russian Investigative Committee said, adding that five terrorists were also killed. The apparently coordinated attacks occurred on Sunday evening, when several gunmen opened fire on two Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a police station in two different cities, Derbent and Makhachkala, the regional capital.
The attackers have not yet been identified, and no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but this Muslim-majority region in the North Caucasus has suffered terrorist attacks in the past. Just three months ago, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack on a concert hall near Moscow that left 145 people dead in one of the deadliest attacks in Russia in the past two decades.
Dagestan authorities declared three days of mourning for Sunday’s victims, including 15 police officers and an Orthodox priest, according to the head of the region, Sergei Melikov.
