Roberto DeCarli and Federica Loiacono are astronomers working at the Bologna Astrophysical and Space Sciences Observatory, part of the National Institute of Astrophysics. They deal with the formation and evolution of the first supermassive black holes and the first galaxies to emerge from the distant universe, using the James Webb Space Telescope and other telescopes. Roberto DeCarli graduated in astrophysics from the University of Milan, obtained his PhD at Como and then worked for several years at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy. It deals with high-Z star formation, the physics of the interstellar medium, quasars, and supermassive black holes.
