A new cycle of conferences at the Museum of the Foundation for Science and Technology in Florence

In the context of “Science Snack ProjectWith the contribution of the Ministry of University and Research, a Museum of the Foundation for Science and Technology in Florencein via Giusti 29, regulating a Senior lecture course given by astrophysicists from the University of Florence and the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory to explain the latest research in astrophysics to the general publicfocusing on great aspects such as Research and study of new planets outside the solar system, the stages of the life of the sun and the great cosmic explosions. Conferences can be followed live and in person: for the audience in the hall there will also be simulations of the topics covered in the planetarium.

September 8, 2022 9 pm: “Childhood of the Violent Sun” curated by Francesco Fontani
Stars are born and die all the time in the universe. Our star, the Sun, was born about 5 billion years ago, lived in it a childhood that was very different from what we see today, and, as it gets older, will, once again, radically change its appearance. The birth and death of a star occur through processes that can be very violent and disturb large parts of the interstellar space in which they occur, modifying it profoundly. We will go through the turbulent process that leads to the birth of a star like the Sun and hundreds of billions of other stars in our galaxy and beyond.

September 22, 2022 at 9 p.m.: “Measuring Distances in the Universe,” by Guido Risaliti
How far are the stars that we see in the night sky? What galaxies do we observe with the most powerful telescopes? This question is one of the most difficult to answer accurately and remains one of the major areas of research in astrophysics today. Measuring the distances of celestial bodies allows us to understand the shape, size, and evolution of the universe. Detecting galaxies at greater distances means studying the universe at an early age, perhaps using the new James Webb Space Telescope, to observe the formation of the universe’s first stars and galaxies.
