Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on imposing sanctions on Mali. The text, prepared by France and the United Arab Emirates, aims to extend the sanctions regime and monitoring procedures for another year, but expressed willingness to review the procedures. Instead, Moscow wants the deficit swap system to immediately end the independent monitoring of UN sanctions against Mali, and to scrap the sanctions regime against the African country entirely in August 2024.
