The planets continue to align to make Kamala Harris the surefire Democratic nominee to take on Donald Trump in November’s presidential election. After confirming that the vice president already has the delegates needed to be officially crowned, she received the official endorsement yesterday from the party’s last remaining elder statesman to do so, and perhaps the most influential in the Democratic world, which largely closes the door on any other heavyweight contender stepping up to challenge her before the Chicago convention. Former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, also endorsed Harris, putting to rest rumors of a possible Michelle nomination.
They did so in a nearly minute-long video that captured a private call between the couple and the current vice president. “We’re calling to say that Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to support him and do everything we can to see him through this election and into the Oval Office,” Obama told Harris. “I’m proud of you. This is going to be historic,” the former first lady told Harris.
Harris speaks on a cell phone, flashing a few smiles, expressing gratitude for the support and long-standing friendship. “Thank you both,” Harris says. “It means a lot. We’re going to enjoy it, too.” The Democratic campaign says the video of the call is real, not entertainment.
