(ANSA) – NEW YORK, APRIL 25 – The Taliban have killed the leader of ISIS Khorasan responsible for the 2021 suicide attack on Kabul Airport, during which 13 Americans and 170 civilians were killed. The New York Times reported, citing some sources, that US intelligence is claiming with “high confidence” that the architect of the attack was killed without providing any evidence. US officials learned in early April that the mastermind of the attack had likely died in a Taliban operation in Afghanistan. It was not clear whether his death was targeted or whether his death was a result of the escalation of clashes between Taliban and ISIS fighters, according to the New York Times, indicating the unwillingness of the US authorities to identify the identity of the slain leader. The Biden administration is calling on the families of the 13 Americans killed in the attack to break the news.
“They didn’t give his name, they didn’t tell me the details of the operation,” said Darren Hoover, the father of Marine Taylor Hoover, who was killed in the attack, describing himself as “frustrated” by the phone call from the White House (ANSA).
