Rural Karst District: A project to promote science and technology in rural schools in Romania

Funded by Romania, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, the project involves the Caving Association and aims to stimulate a passion for science and technology among young people in rural communities.

In Romania’s picturesque countryside, an innovative project is taking shape: the Rural Karst Project, which engages rural schools in promoting science and technology.

This initiative, implemented by the Caving Association, received funding of €47,299 through the Active Citizens Fund – Romania programme, with support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the Granturile SEE 2014-2021¹ programme.

The goal of the Rural Karst Project is to stimulate passion for science and technology among young people in rural communities.

Thanks to this initiative, students will have the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of natural sciences and develop their skills in the field of technology.

The Exploratorii speleological Association warmly invites all young people passionate about science and technology to participate in this exciting adventure.

The Rural Karst Project not only represents an opportunity for learning and fun for young people in rural areas, but also helps promote a green and inclusive Europe.

The funding from SEE Granturiles 2014-2021 demonstrates the commitment of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to creating a sustainable future accessible to all.

The Rural Karst Project is implemented in 27 counties of Romania, where karst areas are located, i.e. areas characterized by phenomena of erosion and decomposition of limestone rocks, which give rise to caves, springs, sinkholes and other special forms. The project includes several activities, including:

  • Create informational and educational materials about the characteristics and importance of karst natural heritage.
  • An information campaign for citizens about the opportunities provided by the project and about the role of the Cave Exploration Association in the community.
  • Training of 500 rural school student volunteers, who will participate in activities to protect and enhance karst natural heritage, such as caving, data collection, mapping, clean-up, awareness raising and dissemination.
  • Karst Natural Heritage Protection Conference, which will bring together experts, authorities, media and civil society to discuss challenges and solutions for the conservation and sustainable development of karst areas.
  • Rehabilitation of the Bandraj Environmental Education Center, where the headquarters of the Cave Exploration Association is located, which will be equipped with modern equipment suitable for educational and recreational activities.
  • Innovation Workshop, which will stimulate creativity and entrepreneurship of young participants, who will be able to design and implement business projects related to biodiversity and sustainable tourism in karst areas.
  • The 60-year Exploratorii Report, which will tell the story and achievements of the Exploratorii Speleological Society, which was founded in 1963 and has been active ever since in promoting and defending the karst natural heritage.
