Macron accepts resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal

The resignation comes as a turning point after Macron insisted during a cabinet meeting today that the “majority coalition” should continue in power, while negotiations continue, especially with the right.

Attal was elected on Saturday as spokesman for the Ennahdha party’s parliamentary group in the new French National Assembly, winning 84 votes out of 98 deputies. The incumbent prime minister was the only candidate to head the group of 98 deputies formed after the second round of the French legislative elections on July 7, in which the new left-wing Popular Front coalition won against all odds.

The parties close to President Macron, led by the Ennahdha Party, constitute the second force, ahead of the far-right National Rally Party, which aspires to rule after receiving the most votes in the first round of the elections.
