The World Health Organization will decide today whether to once again declare monkeypox, now called Mpox, a public health emergency of international concern due to the most aggressive outbreak of the disease occurring mainly on the African continent. In this sense, it is worth remembering that two years ago, this global emergency was already declared and ended just over a year ago. The number of cases reported in the first half of 2024 is the same as that recorded in the whole of 2023. So far, 2,030 cases and 13 deaths have been verified this year compared to 1,145 cases and 7 deaths in the whole of last year.
5 cases since 2022
Regarding the situation in the emirate, despite the discovery of four cases of smallpox in 2022, there was only one case last year, according to the Ministry of Health. So far, and during the whole of 2024, no cases have been recorded, according to what was confirmed by the sources consulted.
However, the Ministry of Health also insisted on continuing to monitor and control the disease. In this regard, it is worth noting that the procedures for the suspected case of Mpox were updated in March. The document points out that these monitoring measures and rapid detection of new cases are what strengthen the containment of the epidemic outbreak.
Common symptoms of the disease include a rash or mucous membrane lesions accompanied by fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, decreased energy, and swollen lymph nodes. The virus can be transmitted through physical contact with a sick person, contaminated materials, or infected animals.
