An earthquake strikes northwest China, killing at least 127 people


At least 127 people were killed and 734 others injured after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck northwest China’s Gansu Province early Tuesday. In addition, there are at least 20 people missing.


As a result of the earthquake, buildings and infrastructure suffered varying degrees of damage, causing water, electricity and road outages, Xinhua News Agency reported. The highest death toll was recorded in Gansu, where at least 100 people lost their lives, in addition to 11 others in Qinghai. Currently, passenger and freight rail services in the affected area have also been suspended.

Rescue services are carrying out search and rescue missions, in addition to transporting victims and examining infrastructure, amid a severe cold wave with temperatures dropping to minus 14 degrees Celsius. The authorities raised the national emergency response level to two.
