(ANSA) – LIMA, Jan 07 – The COVID-19 pandemic has killed nearly 98,000 orphaned children in Peru, the government of the country, the world’s saddest to the pandemic relative to its total population, says.
“Unfortunately, our country is one where nearly 98,000 children have lost their father, mother or guardian during the pandemic,” Minister for Women’s Affairs, Anahi Durand, said, based on data published by the medical journal The Lancet. “We have this sad record,” he added.
Durand said the ministry is currently paying a pension of 200 seouls (about $50) to more than 18,000 families, but the number of beneficiaries is expected to increase. The government intends to provide it to a total of 83,664 orphaned children and adolescents, in addition to psychological and educational support.
Peru, with a population of 33 million, has the world’s highest death rate from Covid-19: 6,122 deaths per million inhabitants. The South American country, which is suffering from the third wave of the epidemic, has recorded more than two million cases of coronavirus and more than 202,900 deaths.
