Starbucks is moving ahead with a new round of store closures across North America, and 36 locations in Southern California appear to be among those affected. The Seattle-based coffee chain has announced plans to close 250 stores as it reduces its footprint and focuses on locations it believes can deliver stronger customer experiences and long-term financial performance.
Starbucks to Close 250 North American Locations
Starbucks said Thursday that it plans to close 250 locations, representing about 1% of its more than 18,000 stores across North America.
The move comes as the coffee giant faces increased competition across the U.S. coffee market. Slowing sales have also put pressure on the company as it works to improve store operations and strengthen its relationship with customers.
Chief Executive Brian Niccol, who took over the company in 2024, has introduced a turnaround strategy aimed in part at making Starbucks stores more inviting and improving the overall customer experience.
Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said in a Thursday letter posted on the company’s website that the stores selected for closure are locations where Starbucks does not see a path toward delivering the customer experience or long-term financial performance it expects.
Company Continues Broader Store Restructuring
The latest closures are part of a broader restructuring effort. Starbucks has already closed more than 600 stores across North America and Europe and has laid off hundreds of non-retail employees.
Despite the restructuring, the company reported stronger comparable-store sales in its fiscal third quarter. In July, Starbucks said global comparable-store sales increased 7.9% compared with the same period a year earlier, while comparable sales at North American stores rose 8.1%.
Starbucks said it would support employees working at affected stores, including by offering potential transfer opportunities. Employees who cannot transfer to another location will receive severance support, according to the company.
Southern California Locations Appear to Be Affected
Starbucks did not release a complete public list of the stores being closed, although the company said affected locations had notices posted in their windows.
A Starbucks enthusiast known online as Winter compiled a spreadsheet identifying likely closures based on stores shown as closed for the coming week in the Starbucks app, according to SFGate.
The spreadsheet identified 36 locations across Southern California. Those stores were reportedly no longer listed in the Starbucks app and were either marked as “permanently closed” on Google or could not be reached by phone.
Starbucks had not confirmed the individual Southern California locations.
