In one of the first scenes You will be backA couple thinks about organizing a party to celebrate their breakup after 15 years of relationship. This unlikely idea gains strength thanks to the couple’s eagerness to show that, despite the end of love, they are both “very well”. However, in one of the many conversations that weave the story, the girl (the wonderful Itsasu Arana) sees the light and says: “This could work in a movie, but in real life…”. And it is precisely in this place, on the border between cinephilia and the flow of reality, that Madrid’s Jonas Trueba builds a stimulating game of mirrors between art and life.
On the fantasy side, Trouba paints a narrative labyrinth in which the story of separation takes place – which refers to classic comedies such as The terrible truth A Philadelphia Stories– intertwined with the creation of a film (within the film) directed by the couple’s wife. On the other hand, on the life side, Trueba offers a sentimental ode to emotional bonds and family inheritance by inviting his ancestor, Fernando Trueba, to play the role of “the father of the anti-bride.” This extended close-up in which Trueba-Pare expands on philosopher Søren Kierkegaard’s interest in examining the meaning of life from the ground up, beyond lofty abstractions, may be the best film Trueba-fil never made.
