The group of teens with diabetes receives information on how to manage nights out and trips to manage the disease well.
The Diabetes Education Therapeutic Nursing Consultation (EDT) has an educational mission for patients diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. These patients receive, in an individualized manner, structured therapeutic education until they reach the goals that allow them to manage their diabetes. The attention given to pregnant patients, pediatric patients and adolescents should be highlighted.
The two nurses specializing in diabetes education monitor each patient from the moment of diagnosis. Among the measures they carry out are group consultations, which have increased significantly over the past year due to the interest of patients in attending them. Over the course of 2023, a total of 212 patients attended group consultations and workshops entirely dedicated to diabetes education. Among those highlighted was the one dedicated to preparing meals for these people, which will be repeated this year, in which culinary professionals who also suffer from diabetes and patients of this consultation participated.
Group workshops are held every month and cover different topics, such as those for teenage patients, dealing with how to manage nights out, traveling or preventing sexually transmitted diseases. On the other hand, another of the most successful workshops is the one dedicated to managing blood sugar when eating foods rich in fat and protein such as pizza, cannelloni, hamburgers, potatoes or paella.
More and more flash sensors are being implanted to better control blood glucose, with training workshops for both type 2 diabetes with multiple doses and type 1 diabetes to enable the patient to gain independence. It is worth noting that in 2023, a total of 1,668 face-to-face consultations were conducted for type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients. In the first half of 2024, 644 type 1 diabetes patients and 281 type 2 diabetes patients visited this specialized consultation.
Throughout 2023, 82 cases of diabetes were diagnosed for the first time. This data shows an increase in the number of these patients in the Levant region.
The Diabetes Education Nursing Consultation coordinates with the hospital’s endocrinology team and provides training, through different educational procedures, to primary care teams in the Levant region. Thus, telephone support – scheduled or urgent – is provided both to health centers in the hospital’s area of influence and to patients as well.
Regarding telephone consultations, a total of 702 telephone consultations were conducted throughout 2023, with the aim of enabling any patient to resolve doubts and problems related to their disease as quickly as possible.
