A Danish court has sentenced a 39-year-old Polish man who assaulted Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to four months in prison, expulsion from the country and a six-year ban on returning. The ruling stressed that there were no political motives and that the damage to politics was minimal.
The attack took place on June 7, at the end of the European election campaign. This led to the cancellation of the Danish Prime Minister’s public agenda, as she was greatly affected by the incident, which occurred amid a state of panic in several European countries due to the climate of political tension and successive attacks on candidates in the election campaigns.
A few weeks ago, Slovakia’s pro-Russian populist prime minister, Robert Fico, was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt by a 70-year-old man who fired multiple shots as he approached to greet a group of citizens in Slovakia’s Handlova, in the center of the country. Fico remained in critical condition for several days and reappeared on June 5 with a video message to fully reintegrate into his work after the European elections.

The attack on Frederiksen had no other physical consequences. The Danish prime minister had attended the party and had gone to central Copenhagen to meet a friend. Suddenly, the attacker intervened, punched her in the arm and pushed her. Frederiksen suffered neck injuries and withdrew from public life for several days.
During the trial, the attacker confirmed that he acted under the influence of alcohol, that he had a bad day, that he had nothing against Frederiksen, and that he even appreciated his political line. According to the forensic report, the person was taking drugs, in addition to alcohol.
