Ukrainian researchers are trained at URV to develop academic programs in the field of climate services in their country

From Monday, May 6 until May 10, the Faculty of Tourism and Geography of the University of Rovira i Virgili will host the fourth training courses of the ClimEd project, which aims to train researchers from Ukraine to develop academic programs in climate services in your country. However, he is the first an exercise Face to face after the COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreak of war in this Eastern European country. The meeting is organized by the University Research Institute for Sustainability, Climate Change and Energy Transition (IU-Rescat) and the Climate Change Center (3C) of the URV. ClimEd is a European Erasmus+ project for training in higher education, which has cooperation with Ukrainian ministries and institutions, as well as two universities in Finland and Estonia.

About twenty researchers from Ukraine traveled to Vila-seca Campus, who will participate in the conference, which can also be followed online, together with members of the URV community. Sessions will be taught by research staff from URV and other institutions involved in the project. “This collaboration symbolizes a step forward in the normalization and advancement of academic and scientific dialogue,” says John Xavier Olano, a researcher at IU-Rescat and one of the people responsible for the event. The war-torn conflict means that “this innovative project now seeks to revitalize and expand Ukraine’s climate education infrastructure, providing new impetus for international cooperation in this essential area.”

Specifically, the project aims to develop curricula and academic programs in accordance with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards and based on the necessary competencies for continuous comprehensive training of professionals in the field of climate services, as well as to initiate and develop additional education in the field of climate change. It is aimed primarily at decision-makers and experts in climate-dependent economic sectors, as well as the general population.

After its inauguration on Monday by the Rector of the URV, Josep Pallares, and the Dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Geography, Oscar Saladi, the event, with morning and afternoon sessions, will continue until Friday.
