Yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a draft law stipulating lowering the military mobilization age from 27 to 25 years. This measure aims to compensate for the shortage of men on the front before the Russian army advances in a new phase of the invasion. The Ukrainian parliament said on its website that this draft law, which was voted on by deputies a year ago and is awaiting issuance by the presidency, enters into force as of today. The government will then have to implement within six months various regulatory texts in accordance with the new era of mobilization.
Military conscription has been a topic of discussion for months, as the Ukrainian army has suffered huge casualties, the extent of which is secret, and therefore has difficulty containing the Russian army. Ukraine is currently having trouble finding volunteers for the front.
Parliament had voted on first reading in February on a series of measures aimed at facilitating mobilization, but the government's first draft was sent back for rewriting a few weeks ago.
