Iran has dramatically slowed the pace of acquiring uranium enrichment weapons and reduced some of its stockpiles. The Wall Street Journal reported that this change of pace could facilitate achieving a nuclear deal with the United States. The slower Tehran stockpiles highly enriched uranium, the fewer special fossils it will have for nuclear power. This news comes twenty-four hours after Tehran’s decision to grant house arrest to four American citizens who have been detained for some time. The referee should expect all four to go home.
And the signs of thawing can be linked to the possible release of funds derived from the sale of Iranian oil, but which are currently frozen in South Korea after the sanctions imposed by Washington on Iran. John Kirby, a White House spokesperson, commented, “If Iran really slows down on nuclear energy, that would be very good news.” At least on one of the many tension fronts there is a drop in tone.
