Disaster risk management science and politics meet at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna

The Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa will host from tomorrow to Wednesday 31 May the Summer School “Evidence of Policy in Disaster Risk Management”, organized by the Civitas Soteria Consortium (coordinated by the research and consulting firm ICF and including, in addition to the Sant’Anna ‘Anna School, departments Civil protection in various European countries), at the request of the Directorate General of European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations of the European Commission (DG ECHO). The Summer School is supported by the Federation’s Civil Protection Knowledge Network, which promotes the exchange of civil protection knowledge between all relevant actors at national and European level.

The event, which targets 70 scientific experts and decision-makers from all countries participating in the European Union’s civil protection mechanism, as well as from European institutions and the United Nations, is divided into a number of plenary sessions and six thematic master classes, on the complex relationship between scientific knowledge and public decision-making. The training offer aims to deepen – combining theoretical thinking with highly interactive tools – topics such as the management and use of information on climate change; prediction models; the role of technicians in the decision-making process; risk communication; international disaster law; Economic aspects related to risk management.

Tomorrow at 2 pm the opening of the works with a first plenary session broadcast live on Sant’Anna’s YouTube channel which sees the participation, among others, of important speakers such as Fabrizio Curcio (Head of the Italian Civil Protection Department); Christos Stylianides (Greece Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, former European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management); Maria Chiara Carrozza (Chairman of the National Reconciliation Commission and former Minister of Education, University and Research). On Tuesday, parallel thematic sessions will follow, convened by high-level experts and policy-makers from prestigious national and international public and academic institutions, such as the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, the World Bank and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and from universities from across Europe. The final plenary session concludes the work of the Summer School on the morning of Wednesday, May 31, to exchange and discuss the results of the two previous working days. The outcome was entrusted to Patricia Gaspar, Portuguese Deputy Minister of the Interior and former Deputy Commander of the Portuguese National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).
