Vinitaly: More than half of sales in the United States are from cooperative wineries – Vinitaly

(ANSA) – VERONA, April 05 – More than half of all Italian wines exported to America are marketed by cooperative wineries that are asserting leadership in wine exports in the Stars and Stripes market. An internal analysis conducted on the occasion of Vinitaly by the Alliance of Agri-Food Cooperatives on key partners showed that growth in wine sales in the US continues to be driven by bubbles, which are confirmed as the best consumer preferences.

“Americans are historically great importers of Italian wines and bubbles have always been at the top of consumer preferences in the Stars and Stripes,” comments Luca Rigotti, wine curator at Alleanza Cooperative Agroalimentari Luca Rigotti. “However, American consumers are increasingly appreciating wines that are low alcohol or vegan-friendly.”

With revenues of €1.860 billion recorded in 2022 (Ismailia), the export of Italian wine to the United States is incorporated as the most important component of cross-border sales of Italian wine, with a share exceeding 23%. “The United States imports wine for $7 billion, equivalent to what Italy exports from all over the world,” concludes Rigotti, stressing that “fortunately, the impact of production and shipping costs is currently declining.”

379 wineries with more than 110,000 members, a production equal to 58% of Italian wines, a turnover of 4.8 billion euros, and 40% of the total sales of national wines belong to the three headquarters of the Alianza cooperatives. The total turnover generated by the export of the cooperative wineries is 2 billion euros, equivalent to a third of all Italian wines marketed abroad. (handle).
