The launch took place shortly after a US aircraft carrier arrived to conduct joint exercises with Seoul in a show of force against Pyongyang
South Korea had previously detected indications that North Korea was preparing to launch a submarine-launched ballistic missile, a weapon that Pyongyang last tested in May, the South Korean president’s office said on Saturday. Today’s launch is the latest in a series of high-intensity nuclear tests ever, including the launch of a long-range ICBM.
The Japanese Coast Guard also confirmed the possible launch of ballistic missiles, citing information from the Ministry of Defense in Tokyo. Ships in the area have been asked to monitor and provide information about any unidentified objects. Public broadcaster NHK said the object appeared to have fallen outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
