US Open, Kyrgios defeats Medvedev, fly to the quarter-finals and return to the top 20

Nick Kyrgios’ star has eliminated defending champion Daniil Medvedev from the US Open and into the quarter-finals. Fortunately, it hinges on the handrail, otherwise the risk of disqualification would be too high. Now the set is over, in 4-1 Kyrgios loses the crossbar again, and risks returning to the set due to the sudden drop of Medvedev, who is struggling to hold on and equalize the number of sets by winning the break for 6-3 in the third set set him back the show at the highest level. Kyrgios cannot be deterred so much that he commits an invasion as well, then in the fourth game recovers from 40-0 and snatches serve from Medvedev. The Australian holds up, at 5-3 not shivering and with a combination of serve and forehands, he advances two sets to one. In the end, Medvedev was left with nothing but the personal mini-battle of the Aces (22 to 21) and the positive balance between aces and a double fault (2 Russian and 7 Australian): in all other stats it was Kyrgios who won. Served much earlier (71% against 59%), who netted several times and with better earnings (29 points on 47 points against 10 points out of 17) and who made more winners (53 vs. 19). In the quarter-finals, Nick Kyrgios is waiting for Russian Karen Khachanov, who defeated Spain’s Pablo Karina Busta in 5 sets (4-6 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-3, the result in 3 hours and 21 minutes).
