(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, AUGUST 25 – “What we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of extremist MAGA (short for Make America Great Again). This kind of quasi-fascism”: So Joe Biden at an event in Maryland to launch a campaign mid term. The US president warned that “this is no longer the Republican Party of your fathers, it is something different” and attacked his predecessor: “I underestimated the amount of damage the past four years have done to America’s reputation in the world.”
“It’s not just about Roe’s ruling on the right to abortion but also about gay marriage”: Biden is sounding the alarm about other rights at risk, after the US Supreme Court overturned the landmark ruling on termination of pregnancy. “We will see efforts everywhere at the national level to eliminate women’s right to choose,” he warned, calling on voters to vote. Biden then warned that Republicans would also try to repeal Obamacare if they won.
Biden then claimed to have turned the tide in the fight against climate change, “which no one doubts now.” The US president recalled recent natural disasters and stressed that the permafrost was “already burning.” He also claimed the US leadership in the Western coalition against the Russian invasion of Ukraine: “We have mobilized the world to oppose Putin’s aggression,” Biden said to long cheers from the crowd.
