Every year, millions of people in Spain eagerly await December 22, the day when the famous Christmas lottery draw takes place.
This event, known as “El Gordo,” is much more than a simple lottery; it’s a national tradition that generates excitement and hope in every corner of the country. But have you ever wondered how much money you’d get if you were lucky enough to win the top prize?
Money You Can Win With El Gordo Christmas Lottery
The Christmas “El Gordo” is undoubtedly the most coveted prize in the Christmas Lottery. This jackpot distributes a staggering €4 million per series. If you have a tenth of it, the smallest part that can be purchased, you will get €400,000.
However, before making plans with all this money, it is important to remember that the Treasury also wants its share. Since 2018, prizes over €40,000 are subject to a 20% tax.

This means that out of the original €400,000, you will have to pay €79,500 to the Treasury. In the end, you will have €320,500 net in your pocket.
Other Important Christmas Lottery Prizes
Although “El Gordo” is the biggest and most famous prize, the Christmas Lottery offers many other prizes that can also change your life. Here are the breakdowns:
- Second Prize: If you are lucky enough to win the second prize, you will receive €1.25 million per series, which is equivalent to €125,000 per tenth. After taxes, this translates to €108,000 net.
- Third Prize: The third prize is worth 500,000 euros per series, i.e. 50,000 euros for each tenth. Tax deducted you will get 48,000 euros.
- Fourth Prizes: There are two fourth prizes of €200,000 each for each series, or €20,000 for each tenth. Here, since the amount is less than €40,000, there are no taxes, so you can keep the entire €20,000.
- Fifth Prizes: Eight fifth prizes are awarded, each worth €60,000 per series, or €6,000 per tenth. As with the fourth prizes, no taxes are paid, so you get the full amount.
Bedria, approximations and repetitions
- Bedria: This is one of the most popular prizes because it touches so many. If you get a Bedria number, you win €1,000 per series, which is €100 per ten. It is also not taxable.
- Approaches and repetitions: In addition, there are prizes for numbers close to “El Gordo” or other big prizes. For example, numbers before and after “El Gordo” win €20,000 per series (€2,000 per tenth). There is also a refund, which returns you the price of the tenth (€20) if the last digit of your number matches the “El Gordo” number.
If you win the Christmas lottery, you can claim your prize from December 22 itself. It is important to know that you have three months to claim your money. After this time, you will not be able to do so.
