The Ministry of Health called on Wednesday for vigilance and efforts to combat monkeypox, and asked those who have been vaccinated with a dose of the vaccine against this disease to complete their immunization. According to data collected by the Ministry of Health, of the 40,610 people vaccinated against MPOX, only 20,900 (50%) completed the regimen, despite belonging to the most at-risk group. Sanitat insists on recommending vaccination, both before infection (pre-exposure) for people with risky sexual practices, and for people who have not contracted the disease, but have had close contact with someone who has it.
The Spanish government reminds us that the latest recommendations for vaccination against the MPOX virus, from July 2023, are still valid. “It is essential to continue strengthening preventive vaccination, especially among the population groups most at risk of this infection: unvaccinated people and those who have only received one dose,” the ministry said in a statement. The groups at risk are mainly gay men, bisexual men and other men who have sex with men.
The recommended vaccination schedule for prevention is two doses, at least twenty-eight days apart. Due to limited availability of doses at the start of the outbreak in 2022, some people in the recommended groups received only one initial dose. “We strongly recommend that these people complete the vaccination schedule with a second dose, regardless of the time elapsed since the first dose,” the Ministry of Health points out, recalling that the protection of people with a single dose is not clear.
