A man died shortly after being arrested by police on Saturday morning in the city of Kiasu. This has been reported by the Public Prosecution Office and the cantonal police.
Shortly after 8.45, in the area between Via Odescalchi and Via Maestre Comacini, eyewitnesses reported to the Police Alert Center a man running screaming and holding a knife. Upon the arrival of the agents, after initially collapsing, the man resisted, making it necessary to use handcuffs, then fell ill and passed out.
The person turned out to be a 44-year-old Italian national residing in the area, who had shortly before entered a shop in Via Maestri Comacini displaying the knife and causing damage.
After immediately unsuccessful first aid, the Mendrisiotto Ambulance Service (SAM) took the man to hospital, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
According to the information gathered by RSI, the 44-year-old had no prior but would have recently displayed behaviors such as attracting the attention of the authorities. Moreover, according to the same information, pepper spray was allegedly used during the arrest.
“Investigations to understand the exact causes and dynamics of the facts have been initiated,” the police reported. An autopsy was also ordered and commercial surveillance video footage was obtained.
