JONC Opens Cervera Festival

The Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya (JONC) opened last night the 43rd edition of the Cervera International Music Festival, which this year has scheduled a total of seven concerts until next Saturday the 20th. The opening concert took place in the courtyards of the University of the capital La Segara, which this time regains the headquarters of the festival and the International Music Tournament, after having to move last year due to works in this building.

The director of the competition, Estefania Balcells, explained that she chose JONC to inaugurate the competition because it was its 30th anniversary. For this reason, a repertoire of dances and songs dedicated to the birthday of Anthony Ros Marba and based on MompĆ³’s works was performed for the first time. It should be remembered that JONC was first performed in a concert specifically in Cervera, in September 1993 at the Gran Teatre de la PassiĆ³. During the inaugural concert, works by Gerhard, Ginastera and Britten were also performed. The show was directed by Manuel Valdivieso, who also directs the rehearsals of the World Music Orchestra. The festival continues, on Monday, with the performance of pianist Alba Ventura, a concert featuring the chair of Emily Pujol de Cervera in solidarity with the new millennium of the Collegiate Church of Sant Pere de Ponts, where the pianist will play next Friday. In parallel with the festival, yesterday began the influx of students registered for the World Music Course, which this year reached a record number of 170 students in violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, horn and trombone. The course also specializes in chamber music, band and orchestra formations.
