Expand the program to improve reading, comprehension, and mathematics.

The Minister of Educational Policies, Ignasi García Plata, announced yesterday that the ministry will expand the Reading Comprehension Plan as well as the Florence Mathematics Program. Thus, out of the 250 public and independent schools where the Reading Comprehension Improvement Plan was implemented, it has finally been applied to 336 schools and institutes. “We had a very high demand from the centers that wanted to participate and we chose to increase the initial number,” explained García Plata. Of these 336 schools, 91 are high schools and the rest are primary schools.

Plata also alluded to the “warning voice” indicated by the decline in students’ written expression skills (in Catalan at ESO and Spanish in primary school) and announced that they would include in the plan to improve reading comprehension, the competence of written expression.

The Florence programme, designed to improve mathematics knowledge, will be implemented in 200 centres with more room for improvement. Education does not plan to implement it further, but García Plata explained that all the programme materials will be available so that all educational centres in Catalonia can access and use them. García Plata explained that in the 200 centres selected, there will be on-site support.

The purpose of the Florence programme is, in primary school, to improve specific aspects of numbering, arithmetic, space, measurement and graphics, while in secondary school the emphasis will be on number sense, spatial sense and measurement. In both stages, half of students’ errors are in the areas of linking skills, reflections, argumentation and problem solving.
