CNN reported yesterday that the United States has received intelligence in recent weeks about an Iranian plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump. In addition, a Secret Service official shared details of the growing threat against the Trump campaign. The White House declined to comment on the matter, but said there was no indication that the shooter in the alleged assassination attempt on the New York businessman on Saturday had domestic or foreign accomplices. Iran responded by calling the accusations against it “baseless and malicious.”
US officials have been concerned for years that Tehran could retaliate against Trump for ordering the assassination of military commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020. “As we have said many times, we have been monitoring Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years, going back to the last administration,” said Adrienne Watson, a spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council. “These threats stem from Iran’s desire to avenge the killing of Qassem Soleimani, and we consider this a top national security issue.” CNN confirmed that the intelligence about the Iranian plot was provided by a human source.
