Depressing news for 160 workers at French multinational glass company Saint-Gobain. And all this after he made the decision on Monday to close the Securit division of his company in Aviles (Asturias).
We're talking about an entire factory that makes car windshields, which, according to the unions, will put 160 families on the streets. Sources from the French multinational company confirmed that this factory should close permanently, at the latest, in June 2024.
There is still some agreement to be reached with the Works Committee, to which a few hours ago the final decision on the closure was presented. It remains to be seen, finally, how many of these 160 employees of Avilés' workforce will be affected by the ERO due to the interruption of activity that the company will implement.
160 employees are in critical condition due to the closure of the Saint-Gobain factory in Aviles
Losses at this plant since 2021 mean that in addition to the current structural and market issues, the company has decided to close the plant.
Many factors, especially labor costs, energy prices and supplies, have led to a “very tight margin” in production. It also didn't help at all how the auto sector has drifted lately, the company explained.
For Saint-Gobain, the only solution is to carry out this ERO operation especially due to the weak activity expected from mid-May at the mentioned plant.
The end of the windshield factory will be a reality, at the latest, in June
This closure will not cause any shock to workers of other Saint-Gobain Sekurit factories, such as the Arboç factory in Tarragona or the glass department in Aviles.
He stated from the French multinational company that the dialogue process will be initiated before doing so legally. We want to reach an agreement in the most amicable way before next April 25.
Securit stated that it would implement this process “with the utmost responsibility and social sensitivity, while respecting the legal framework and workers’ rights.” Despite everything, they have made it clear from Saint-Gobain that they intend to continue in Asturias for a long time in the glass section of Aviles.
